Two members of the SFU Pipe Band have won international top honors in solo piping at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban, Scotland this week. Craig Sutherland, from Crieff, Scotland, has won the Highland Society of London Gold Medal—one of the most prestigious prizes in the piping world.
The win means the band now has three gold medalists—Pipe Major Alan Bevan and Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee are previous winners.
Meanwhile Lee takes home the Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel (MSR) Prize. The contest is restricted to pipers who have won the A-grade March or Strathspey/Reel at these games before. Lee earlier won the gold medal in 2001.
With this latest prize, Lee has now won every major solo piping competition in the world at least once.
Lee will also compete at the Glenfiddich Championships at Blair Castle in October. He earned the invitation to participate as one of the world's top 10 pipers after his solo win at the Masters Competition at Piping Live. The event was held prior to the recent World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, where the band placed fifth.
