SFU Honourary Degrees Recipients 2024

Lead Drummer J. Reid Maxwell to be awarded an Honorary Degree by Simon Fraser University - June 2024 The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band is very pleased to announce that Lead Drummer J. Reid Maxwell will be awarded an Honorary Degree by Simon Fraser University for his tremendous contributions to the world-wide success of the band, its development pipe bands program, and instruction of generations of drummers.


The induction ceremony will take place at the Tuesday morning June 11, 2024 Convocation at the Simon Fraser University campus on Burnaby Mountain. Reid becomes the third band member receiving SFU's highest honour with Pipe Major (Emeritus) Terry Lee and Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee being awarded Honorary Degrees by Simon Fraser University in 2013.


Congratulations Reid for so much you have given to the advancement of pipe band drumming and its players.

We spoke with Lead Drummer J. Reid Maxwell after SFU Pipe Band practice on March 14, the day Simon Fraser University announced the Honorary Degree recipients for 2024. We asked him how he was first informed of being awarded an Honorary Degree from Simon Fraser University and how he felt when the news finally broke.
